SSHC has many years’ experience of working on a range of monuments and sculpture

This forms part of our core work and is highly specialised

Our in-house monuments team carry out emergency response treatment to critical monuments in danger of structural collapse. We often dismantle and re-build monuments. Our conservators carry our complex cleaning, repair and consolidation programmes. Our carvers replace elements that are beyond repair or are missing. We work with engineers and other professionals to provide a comprehensive service.

Case Studies

West Norwood Cemetery image
West Norwood Cemetery

In 2015 SSHC Ltd were commissioned by Historic England to carry out a condition and reccommendation survey to forty monuments at risk across three London cemeteries. Structural issues were identified as significant at West Norwood Cemetery leading to the Strachey team working closely with structural engineers throughout the contract. The Strachey team  later undertook emergency response treatment to critical monuments in danger of uncontrolled collapse.

Quainton

The focus of the work at Quainton  was the cleaning of the Dormer Monuments and reducing the levels of damp in the tower. These immense marble structures had been recently attributed to the highly influential sculptor Rysbrack and were suffereing moisture related damage.

Hardy Monument

The Hardy monument has been subject to previous stone replacements within the last 15 years which have subsequently failed, leaving elements of the tower structurally precarious. An initial ropes access survey helped to identify and quantify the level and nature of the failure and helped inform the specification of works.
