Wardrobe Tower is a surviving fragment of a former tower. Originally this is thought to date to the 1190s, being part of Longchamp's work during the reign of Richard I. The fragment is D-shaped in plan and is known to stand on the line of the Roman landward wall. It incorporates the base of a Roman bastion still visible as the foundation of Roman bricks and a section of the Roman city wall.

St Mary's Church, Iffley is one of the best surviving examples of Romanesque architecture. The exuberantly adorned west front comprises of a chevroned, recessed portal, carved panels including signs of the zodiac and exquisitely carved beak heads.

In 2018 SSHC  undertook a programme of cleaning & repairs of the stone and brickwork at Lincon's Inn gatehouse and boundary walls at Newman's Row in the City. After samples of bedding and pointing mortars were agreed,  vegetation was carefully removed and cleaning took place. There was some brick and stone replacement along with repointing and  re-decoration of the windows and other ferementa.

Snodhill Castle is an 11th century motte and bailey castle on a steeply sloping, heavily wooded hill. The site was of great archaeological interest and environmentally sensitive as several protected species of flora and fauna were present.

Corfe Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument in a very sensitive position close to the south coast of Dorset. SSHC Ltd has worked at Corfe Castle over several different phases between 2007 - 2019. This ancient structure presented a unique set of challenges in terms of health and safety risks, not least because the castle remained open to the public throughout the works, albeit with restricted access to some areas. The fact that restricted areas were kept minimum was a testament to the working relationship between the National Trust, the CDM coordinator and the Strachey team.

This beautiful font contains significant evidence of historic polychrome. A report previously written by SSHC Ltd showed how the font was compromised by an unstable floor.  Evidence of salt efflorescence and high moisture readings showed the step upon where it stood was acting as a wick drawing up excess moisture.

This beautiful Easter Sepulchre is a significant example of the move towards the Renaissance displaying high quality carving with exceptional level of detail and extensive areas of historic paint (polychrome).

In 2015 SSHC Ltd were commissioned by Historic England to carry out a condition and reccommendation survey to forty monuments at risk across three London cemeteries. Structural issues were identified as significant at West Norwood Cemetery leading to the Strachey team working closely with structural engineers throughout the contract. The Strachey team  later undertook emergency response treatment to critical monuments in danger of uncontrolled collapse.

The programme of work for the House of St Barnabas involved careful repairs to areas of the beautiful interior plasterwork in the entrance hall, main stair and the drawing room. It also included the taking down and cleaning of some of the crystal chandeliers.

The focus of the work at Quainton  was the cleaning of the Dormer Monuments and reducing the levels of damp in the tower. These immense marble structures had been recently attributed to the highly influential sculptor Rysbrack and were suffereing moisture related damage.

The scope of the work to the Queen's House & Bell Tower comprised of careful cleaning, consolidation and repair of the surfaces of historic stone and brickwork.

Recently SSHC undertook a major programme of repairs to the external facade of Fulham Palace. The use of hot limes was specified by the architect. A suitable area was created for mixing of the hot lime mortar, this was co-ordinated with the main contractor. We took the opportunity to run workshops onsite to train other memebers of the SSHC team in the  mixing and use of hot lime.

Brompton Cemetery on Fulham Road is one of the 'Magnificent Seven' London cemeteries and is one of the oldest and most distinguished. The richness  of the art and symbolism contaiined in many of the graves and monuments traces art movements across two centuries.

SSHC have been undertaking work on the spire and tower at All Saints Church since February 2018. Previously we had undertaken a rope access survey before tendering for the work specified by CA Ryan Bunce.

The scope of works to this historic landmark building in the heart of Whitehall included the sensitive steam cleaning of all elevations, Portland stone repair and indents, and stone replacement to the ashlar and decorative detail. The work included the dismantling and rebuilding of the ashlar balustrades.

St Peter’s Church in Tiverton is a very large Grade 1 Listed Parish Church built mainly from red sandstone in the 15th Century. The highly intricate Greenway Chapel was added in 1517 and built from Beer Stone. Many decorative carvings of exotic creatures and sea voyages are displayed. Over the last 500 years it has suffered greatly, mainly due to the softness of the stone.

This survey and report was commissioned by the Bedford Estate as a result of increasing concern at the ongoing loss of the shell, fossil, coral, ceramic and mineral decoration to the interior of this wonderful shell grotto, situated in the children's garden at Woburn Abbey.

This detailed survey and report set out to assess the condition of the existing structures, including analysis of the original building materials, mortar samples, and construction.

This was a major conservation programme to a series of significant monuments dedicated to the Rodney Family at St Leonards Church, Rodney Stoke. The programme included imporovements to the overall environment, including drainage, ventilation and lime mortars to the external elevations

Great Malvern Priory commissioned this survey and condition report of the internal and external stonework to support the development of its Conservation Management Plan, and to inform the projected costs and timescale of future works.

Work has begun on repairing a piece of Dartington’s heritage. The work is being carried out to the Grade II-listed wall surrounding Darting­ton estate’s 66-acre Deer Park, which dates back to Anglo- Saxon times.

One of the grandest fountains in Europe, the Perseus and Andromeda Fountain is Grade I listed and is set in an ornamental shaped pool c.1860 carved by James Forsyth for Lord Ward, the first Earl of Dudley.

During 2016 SSHC undertook a contract of works at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight which is in the care of English Heritage. The work addressed the vegetation growth, failed pointing and defective stonework to the castle walls.The focus was the west part of the Inner Bailey - to the east elevations of the Gatehouse and Armoury.

The Great Hall standing structures were stripped of their roof in the 1550's, and have since fallen into disrepair.

The Stewkley Reredos was designed by GE Street in 1862, a leading practitioner of the Victorian Gothic Revival. The programme began with structural investigations to look at movement and its causes; the decision was then made to extensively dismantle parts of the reredos in order to remove the iron cramps. These were found to be heavily corroded, and no longer adequately supported the backing panels of the reredos, leading to significant structural instability.

Witchampton ruins are the remains of the Manor House originating from the 13th century. SSHC undertook a careful programme of consolidation, weather protection and stabilisation, working closely with archaeologists and from photographic records.

A number of monuments over the entrance to the busy café at St Stephen’s Church in Bristol city centre were found to be unstable and in danger of collapse. A conservation programme on five historic monuments was carried out including dismantling, removing the corroded iron fixings and rebuilding with stainless steel cramps.

This project was highly commended in the 2014 John Betjeman Awards. Following a trial of materials and methodology undertaken by ourselves in October 2012, SSHC was subcontracted by Cliveden Conservation to execute the works to the friable stone surfaces on the south side old cloisters of Tewkesbury Abbey. 

In 2016 SSHC were at Wells Cathedral, working on the North Quire Aisle walls and parapets which are situated in one of the most sheltered areas of the Cathedral. Thus, this area of the Cathedral has retained a higher percentage of the earlier fabric.

We are currently working at Evesham Bell Tower; the magnificent and only remaining structure of the former Abbey complex.

A major conservation programme to twelve substantial chest tombs in St Mary’s Churchyard Watford including dismantling and rebuilding, detailed surface repairs and replacement carved details such as decorative urns which is ongoing.

The secluded church of St Mary hides an extraordinary and rare scheme of sgraffito panels illustrating the Benedicte. The murals were executed in 1888 by the eminent Arts and Crafts artist Heywood Sumner and cover nearly every surface of the interior of the church.

The Hardy monument has been subject to previous stone replacements within the last 15 years which have subsequently failed, leaving elements of the tower structurally precarious. An initial ropes access survey helped to identify and quantify the level and nature of the failure and helped inform the specification of works.

The west tower at St Mary the Virgin, Bishops Lydeard is recognised by architectural historians as being one of England’s greatest contributions to medieval art.

In 2014 Strachey Conservation carried out a condition and recommendation report on the Romanesque south door at St Peter’s Church, Windrush for Andrew Townsend Architects.

The contract to the Grade II* church of St Peter’s Church, Kineton, Warwickshire is underway and will continue through to the spring of 2015.

The contract at St George’s Hanworth included repair of the nave roof and a detailed programme of stone replacement and repair to the nave masonry.

St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol was described by Elizabeth I as "The fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England."

South West Built Environment Awards, 2016: Cannington Court, Somerset received the Heritage Award (Kier Construction). SSHC were a specialist subcontractor and undertook a major cleaning and repair programme to the interior and exterior stonework, and internal plaster repairs to the cupola. Phase 2 has now been completed on the intriguing Grade I listed building at Cannington Court. This programme involved preliminary investigations and survey work alongside the programme of works on the external and internal stonework.
