SSH Conservation honours the legacy of Sally Strachey Historic Conservation, founded in 2010. The same experienced team carries that work forward today.
Led by Jake Motley, Managing Director since 2019, the team brings experience of major contracts at the Tower of London, Windsor Castle and Banqueting House.

Conservation of historic masonry, stone replacement and carefully executed repairs to architectural detail. Brickwork and walling are considered as part of the existing fabric.

Compatible repairs, pointing and care for historic plaster and decorative surfaces.
Lime mortar repairs and repointing, reinstatement of lost detail, and plasterwork. Material compatibility, texture and finish are considered alongside the condition and significance of the original.

Conservation of monuments and sculpture, including careful dismantling and rebuilding where required. The published portfolio includes the Crystal Palace dinosaurs, the Whittington Stone and The Leaning Lady.

Stabilisation, masonry repair and carefully coordinated work to historic structures.
Structural repairs and interventions, including dismantling and rebuilding where required. At Castell Coch, the work includes stone replacement, repointing and rebuilding a bulging buttress section.

Close observation, informed advice and cleaning suited to historic fabric.
Surveys and consultancy help clients understand the condition of historic fabric and plan appropriate work. Specialist cleaning includes techniques such as Thermatech and poultice cleaning used at Sherborne Abbey.

Planning, coordination and delivery of complete projects, alongside specialist conservation.
From initial scope to handover, SSH brings conservation expertise and project management together: agreeing programmes and responsibilities, coordinating trades and consultants, managing progress and costs, monitoring quality, and keeping the client informed.

ROYAL WARRANT HOLDER
SSH Conservation holds the Royal Warrant for Building Conservation Services, by appointment to His Majesty King Charles III.
It is a distinction we present alongside the work itself: the careful conservation of buildings, monuments and sculpture.
About SSH Conservation ↗HOW WE’RE ENGAGED
We take responsibility for the whole conservation contract: programme, site set-up, CDM duties, coordination of specialist trades and handover. Suited to direct appointments from estates, churches, councils and institutions.
We deliver the masonry, sculpture and conservation packages within a main contractor’s project, working to their programme and site rules. Our recent work at Castell Coch for Cadw was delivered this way.
Condition surveys, trial samples, method statements and specifications prepared with the project architect, before works are tendered or begun.
