Dartington Deer Park Walls

Work has begun on repairing a piece of Dartington’s heritage. The work is being carried out to the Grade II-listed wall surrounding Dartington estate’s 66-acre Deer Park, which dates back to Anglo- Saxon times.

The repair work, which began last month, is the first phase in an ambitious £600,000 project to rebuild 2,000ft of the listed wall; build a fully accessible circuit of the Deer Park to ensure access for people of all mobilities; and create an educational visitor experience to reveal the hidden history of life on the estate from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day. The work on the wall, which is expected to take three months to complete, is being carried out with cash from Natural England and the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme. The Deer Park area is officially designated as being heritage at risk and considerable work is needed to preserve its future. This relatively small first phase of work is addressing some of the highest priority areas of the wall needing work. Dartington has applied for funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Viridor Credits Environmental Company in order to undertake a much bigger project in the park which would start later this year – repairing and conserving the rest of the park wall, enhancing physical access to the area with improved paths and signage, and a range of related activities to encourage public understanding and engagement in this relatively unknown historic part of the estate. The project would create a new outdoor learning programme for primary schools in the region and create a number of new volunteering roles, including volunteer park guides to escort the public in the area."
